Racket #1

Note: In one of my post from the Pet Gallery, I mentioned that I will upload my old comic from my old, defunct blog. Well, here it is! I made a lot of these but there will definitely be more. I did made some minor changes to it such as fixing the colors and removing unnecessary design. I can still access my old blog though and post my old description about the comic.

From the old blog: 'Here is the first volume of Racket! This comic chronicles the life of a dog named Racket and his friend (or rather enemy) Caddy the eccentric 'Nyahoo' kitty. I had already made this and some other Racket comics about one or two years ago, so I decided it's about time I post them. I did not want to hesitate to post any longer or else I might end up procrastinating or develop a lack of confidence in myself as an artist. I'm sure many cartoonists that were starting out had procrastinated or lack confidence and then they end up giving up their dream to become a cartoonist, comic book artist, or manga artist. I just need to keep moving forward and not be too picky about whether my comic have an art style or not. I'm sure that as I keep posting my Racket comics, my experience as an artist and a cartoonist will grow and I will become better at making comics and drawing.'

Racket #2

Note: When I was making Racket comic, I had some issue with coloring digital comic. What may look good on one computer may look bad on another computer. I think it had something to do with my old computer monitor not being calibrated properly. This is why I recently had to adjust some of the coloring of the comic. I especially have to adjust coloring on the human, which looked very grey rather than flesh colored. Tip for artist: Make sure the computer monitor is calibrated properly in order to get more accurate coloring.

From the old blog: 'Here is another Racket comic. I tried to experiment what might work and what might not work for the comic since I was very new to making comic. For example, I tried to experiment with the border lines for the panels. The 1st Racket comic had a small border. I used a sable brush for that. But in the 2nd and 3rd Racket comics, I used a C-2 Nib pen to create a much stable and solid black line. Sometimes I had a feeling of going back to using a smaller border. When I scan the comic with the big solid black border, sometimes the black border isn't scanned well enough that there are some white dots on it. I pretty much have to fill those white dots using the pencil tool in Adobe Photoshop Element 12, which is a bit time consuming. I didn't have much issue with that for the smaller border. But then again big solid black border line can look really great and stable in a comic. I decided to continue to use C-2 Nib to make the solid black border line until I find a better method.'

Racket #3

Note: Although I created the Racket comic in 2015, Racket was a character I created LONG before that. I was in elementary(probably 6/7yrs old) when I created the character Racket. Racket is based on Rocko(both names sound kind of similar, lol) from Rocko's Modern Life. Rocko's Modern Life was one of my favorite cartoons when I was growing up. One thing I used to do in my childhood was gather a bunch of paper, fold them like a book, staple them, and then draw illustrations on them. At that time, I didn't know what comic was but I did read a lot of children's book with illustrations in them. Children's book was actually my inspiration for making my own book at the time and, of course, that led to me learning about comic(newspaper comic) and wanting to make comic.

From the old blog: 'I decided to post another Racket comic on the same day. I want to try to get as many Racket comics on my blog as I can. Racket was inspired by the newspaper comics that I read every Saturday and Sunday. My comic was also inspired by the 90s cartoons (especially Rocko's Modern Life) from Nickelodeon.'

Racket #4

Note: This is Caddy's first appearance in the Racket comic. I adore him because of the catchphrase 'Nyahoo!'. Back in elementary, I made other characters, beside Racket, and other stories in my 'comic books.' Some of my other characters include...Catty and Doggy! Yeah... I know I was not the best at coming up with character name. Catty led to Caddy(aka Nyahoo Kitty or Nyakit[rhymes with Racket]) and as for Doggy, I figured he could be the same character as Racket.

From the old blog: 'We all know who Racket is right now. Racket is the funny white dog. He's what I like to call a 'punk pooch.' He dons a spike collar, he tells jokes, he's a tough mutt. A Punk Pooch. But who is the new character? This new character is a blue cat named Caddy the "Nyahoo" Kitty. He has an odd habit of sneaking. He does not talk very much but every time he outwit Racket or succeed in something, he like to say his catchphrase: NYAHOO! 'Nyahoo' is a word that I made up. I simply combined the Japanese onomatopoeia for 'meow', which is 'nya', with 'yahoo'. NYAHOO!'

Racket #5

Note: Okay...so now for the dark side of my childhood comic making history. When I got into high school, I kind of stopped making my childhood 'comic book.' Like many artists, I thought my old drawing was 'cringy.' So...I burned and trashed almost all my childhood 'comic books' in the hope that no one will ever see how cringy my old drawing look. Now that I'm older, I realized that was one of the biggest mistake I ever made in my life. Sure my old childhood art style was crude and scribblish but that's, well, typical in most child's artwork. Those cringy 'comic book' were like record of my art progress. Those 'comic book' was what made me the artist I am today...and I threw them all away. I really regret that. Since then, I try to save all of my arts, even terrible ones so that years into the future, I can look back fondly and be like 'Wow, look at those progress I made in my art.'

From the old blog: 'NYAHOO! Looks like Nyahoo kitty is up to no good again. Cone of shame sure look strange on a dog, I wonder how a dog can eat with that thing in the way.'

Racket #6

Note: Even though I destroyed all of my childhood 'comic books' back in high school, I still remember almost all of my characters. Racket is definitely one of them and is pretty much the first cartoon character I ever made. That's why he's memorable to me. I mentioned in my previous post that Caddy is based on Catty and Racket is both himself and Doggy. There will be a couple more characters from my childhood comic that will show up later in this current Racket comic. And of course, I have more childhood comic characters that doesn't really fit in the settings of the Racket comic and so I will have to create new comics for them in the future.

Note: You may noticed that I sometime change panel format in my comic. Instead of the usual 4 panel strip, I sometimes used one with multiple panels. Back when I had my old blog, I would post multi-panel strip on Sunday and 4-panels strip on other days. The multi-panel strip is kind of a nod to 'Sunday Funnies' like in the newspaper comics.
